The Best Luxury Accommodation in Wellington to Book in 2023

Wellington might not have the glamour of London or Paris but it definitely has its fair share of luxury experiences and that includes some truly incredible Wellington luxury accommodation options.

Whether you’re looking for an international-brand 5-star hotel or an off-the-grid cabin, here are our picks of the best places to stay in Wellington for when you want to treat yourself.

Luxury lodges and resorts in the Wellington region

Whether it’s your first time in the Wellington Region or are a local looking for a staycation, luxury lodges are the best of the best for accommodation options. We can guarantee you’ll feel truly spoilt at any of these places.

Wharekauhau Country Estate

This is where Prince William and Catherine stayed on their last visit to New Zealand. That’s probably all we need to say. This lodge near Cape Palliser is best accessed by helicopter, flying over Wellington harbour.

Once you’re there you have the gourmet kitchen, day spa, croquet lawn, tennis courts and pool at your disposal plus quad biking, horse rides and archery can be arranged.

Parehua Resort

This resort is a long way from the beach but when it comes to country luxury it’s spot on. Parehua is located on the outskirts of Martinborough, perfect as a base for wineries tours and retreats.

The accommodation consists of cosy self-contained villas and cottages on extensive grounds that include tennis courts, outdoor dining, a private lake and a pool.

Pipinui Point

Pipinui Point is the accommodation part of Boomrock Lodge on the west coast near Makara. There is only one cabin onsite so you can be sure it’s a private one-of-a-kind experience. The shipping-container-style cabin is perched on the edge of the cliff with views out to the Tasman Sea and Kapiti.

I recommend spending as much time as possible in the outdoor hot tub but when you do need to drag yourself away the gourmet chefs from Boomrock can drop some top-quality food down to you.

5-star hotels in Wellington City

Wellington does have many of the standard luxury hotels that you would find in any capital city however these options are concentrated in the central city as there are no 5-star hotels located elsewhere in the region.

Sofitel Wellington

The Sofitel is one of Wellington’s newer hotels, having been refurbished a few years ago and everything inside sparkles. Tucked away on quiet Bolton Street near Parliament, it balances convenience and relaxation. This is a very similar experience to what you would get at any Sofitel around the world.

QT Wellington

The QT Hotel is close to the waterfront and the Courtenay Place entertainment. The décor is quirky and decadent with a focus on art and indulgence. The Hippopotamus Restaurant on site is known for its indulgent high tea and cocktails.

Luxury Airbnb and rentals in the Wellington region

There are currently two Airbnb Plus properties in the Wellington region:

Cottage in Wellington

This cottage is the kind of place that has you imagining what it would be like to live in Wellington. It’s a very cute and homey place but in a polished way with plenty of luxurious touches. Located in Mount Victoria it’s close to Oriental Bay beach and the cafes around the waterfront.

Apartment in Porirua

This apartment screams coastal chic with a thoughtful minimalist design and all the focus on the sea views. The apartment is on the very edge of Porirua (closer to Plimmerton Station) so has a peaceful appeal without being too far from amenities.

Unique luxury accommodation in the Wellington region

Kawakawa Station

Camping is luxurious when you’re staying at Kawakawa Station. The round tent has clear panels on the roof for stargazing and in the remote Cape Palliser setting the stars are out in full force. In addition to the main tent, there is a hut with full kitchen and dining facilities plus outdoor beanbags, a hammock and an outdoor bath.

Moonlight Peak

This spot might be our favourite of all the luxury accommodation options simply because of the outdoor hot tub which looks out across the valley. Set in a remote part of the Wairarapa the cabin has views of the Tararua Ranges and the Cook Strait. The cabin is fully off the grid with solar power, self-catering and 4wd transfers (included in the price).

In Short: Luxury Accommodation in Wellington

As a capital city, Wellington has a lot to offer in terms of accommodation and that includes at the high end. There are some incredible indulgent properties in this list and many more that didn’t make it in but are still worth a stay.

When planning your Wellington trip, I’d highly recommend spending some tie out of the city centre so you can see more of the Wellington Region and check out some of these outlying properties that offer plenty of privacy for a getaway.
